We needed that win to push forward, says Ter Stegen
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen has called the 3-0 win over Sevilla that helped the Blaugrana reach their 42nd Copa Del Rey finals a “very necessary” one that will help the club push forward.
Barcelona played their hearts out to overcome a 2-0 loss in the first leg. Ousmane Dembele put Barcelona a goal ahead in the first half. In the second half with the score still at 1-0 Ter Stegen saved a Lukas Ocampos penalty and Gerard Pique scored a last minute header to take the match to extra time where Martin Braithwaite scored to send Barcelona through.
“It was a very special game and the mentality has been key to turning the tie around. We knew we had to be patient, but also intense and we succeeded. We want to win titles,” Ter Stegen told Barça TV.
“This victory was very necessary, it helps us to push forward. It was one of our objectives, so we are very happy to reach the final.
“In the penalty there was the tie. If they had scored us, it would have been very difficult to turn it around, we deserved to overcome the tie. Penalties are a lottery, but I always try to help the team.”
The final is on April 17 and Barcelona will face the winner of the match between Levante and Athletic Bilbao later tonight. Barcelona also beat Sevilla 2-0 at the weekend to reignite their La Liga title hopes.
