I feel a little bit guilty for Lampard’s sacking, says Timo Werner

Chelsea German forward Timo Werner has admitted he feels a little bit guilty for the sacking of the manager that brought him to the Premier League Frank Lampard.

Werner was Lampard’s second signing after Hakim Ziyech. The German started brightly but a run of 18 games and 1000 minutes without a goal in 100 days in all competitions coupled with missed chances and general team performance led to the eventual departure of Lampard.

“When you come here to play as a striker and be the man to score the goals, of course I felt a little bit guilty that I missed so many chances,” Werner told Sky Sports.

“For the club, for the old manager but also for me because I want to score all the time and as much as I possibly can.”

Werner missed a lot of big chances to either win a game or secure a draw for Chelsea, a situation that had an influence on the team’s result. His sharp decline in front of goal resulted in incessant losses for Frank Lampard’s side.

“Of course, if I’d scored four or five more goals maybe the old manager would still be here because we’d maybe have won two or three games more but you can’t look too much into the past because there are too many games ahead of us,” Werner said

“The past was like this and of course I feel a little bit guilty, but in football you have to go on, and now we have a lot of big games in the next few weeks and you have to look forward, especially when you have a new manager.”

Werner hasn’t quite hit the ground running under new boss Thomas Tuchel but ended his goal drought in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.
