It’s harsh to call the French league farmers league – Youri Tielemans

The supposed lack of competition in the German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, Italian Serie A, Dutch Eredivisie, Scottish Premier League and other leagues where a team or two appears too dominant has brought about football fans referring to such leagues as a farmers league.

Paris St. Germain has won eight of the last nine Ligue 1 titles, with Monaco being the only other winner and every season after season remains favourite due to the team being star studded and the inconsistencies of other clubs.

Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans played for two seasons in the French Ligue 1 with Monaco before securing a loan move to Leicester City in 2019, a deal he made permanent later on. He has now rebuffed the tag of farmers league on the Ligue 1.

“No, that’s very harsh, that’s absolutely not true. It’s a very good league to play in and I think it was a very good start for me to be there, it’s a very physical league and you’ve got to be technically good as well,” Tielemans told OJB Sports during the Europa League press conference.

“I think the only difference between both leagues is the intensity. In the Premier League it’s very fast while in the French Ligue 1 it’s a bit more static and you’ve to be focused as well to play in that league.”

Leicester City will host Slavia Praha later today in the Europa League round of 32 at the King Power stadium having played out a goalless draw in the first leg.
