Rohr hints at Eagles call-up for Awoniyi and others for AFCON qualifiers
Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has hinted that in-form Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi could be called up to the Super Eagles squad for the last two games of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
Awoniyi has been in fine form for the German capital club this season under Urs Fischer. He has scored five Bundesliga goals and assisted another three this season.
”We have some new players that can be scouted, some of them are playing in Germany, we have one in Union Berlin which is a good team this season,” Rohr told Super Eagles TV.
“We have other players who are playing in France, Lorient. We have players who are doing well in Eastern Europe, also Austria, Czech Republic and we know all what all of them are doing.”
Rohr also commented about the Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa who has been without a club since leaving Al Nassr and is reportedly in contact with Premier League club West Brom.
Rohr confirms Musa is in the UK and said he hopes he signs in the coming days and that they are in touch and he is free to sign anywhere he wants.
Retired Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo recently signed for Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab after his loan at Manchester United expired has been teased with a return to the Super Eagles.
Rohr didn’t rule out Ighalo’s return but said its a matter of “if he’s ready to return,” and also noted it’d be good to have him to help the young Eagles squad.
