German second division club plays a goalkeeper as an outfield player

German second division club FC Wurzburger Kickers played a goalkeeper as an outfield player with majority of their players positive to Covid-19.

Dutch goalkeeper Eric Verstappen was brought on in the 90th minute as an outfield player during the 2-0 loss at SV Darmstadt 98.

The club named a 14-man squad, which included two goalkeepers and as the last man on the bench, Verstappen was thrown into action in the final minutes of the game.

The coach applauded his team’s fighting spirit despite the size of the squad.

“We gave everything… Even goalkeeper Eric Verstappen threw everything in after coming on as a substitute in the storm! After a great fight our self-sacrificing squad with 12 field players & 2 goalkeepers had to fight @sv98 but defeated 0:2. #SVDFWK”
