UCL Roundup – Madrid teams scale through, Inter bundled clear, Ajax axed down

The second round of matches for the final group games of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League were keenly contested as there were all to fight for for most teams.

Group D matches were played in the earlier kickoff, leaders Liverpool drew 1-1 away at FC Midtjylland. Mohammed Salah scored after just 55 seconds and became Liverpool’s all time top scorer in the Champions League with 22 goals. Atlanta left it late to beat Ajax 1-0 in Holland and send them to the Europa League.

In Group A, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid both got 2-0 wins over Lokomotiv Moscow and RB Salzburg respectively. Atletico proceeded to the knockout stages while Salzburg settled for a place in the Europa League.

Group B drama was resolved with Real Madrid and Borussia Monchengladbach going through despite Madrid beating Gladbach 2-0. Shakhtar moved on to the Europa League and Inter were eliminated after both teams settled for a 0-0 draw.

In Group C, Olympiacos secured Europa League spot despite losing 2-0 at home to Porto after Marseille were condemned to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Group leaders Manchester City. Sergio Aguero scored on his return from injury. 

Meanwhile the delayed Group H match between PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir was resumed today and ended 5-1 in favour of PSG.
