UEFA Champions League Final Group Games Preview
The final group games of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League will take place across Europe today, Tuesday, December 8 and tomorrow, Wednesday, December 9.
There are still plenty to play for in most of the groups except group E which has already been decided and tonight’s result won’t affect the standings. The biggest drama is in Group B where all four teams still have the chance to proceed and Group H where three of the four teams still hold a chance to proceed.
Below are the review of the groups and possible outcomes.
Tuesday Fixtures
Group E
Chelsea (13 points) vs Krasnodar (4), Rennes (1) vs Sevilla (10)
Tonight’s result will not affect the standings in Group E as all positions are confirmed.
Chelsea and Sevilla are through to the round of 16 as group winners and runners-up respectively. Krasnodar will finish third and enter the UEFA Europa League round of 32 while Rennes are already eliminated.
Group F
Lazio (9) vs Club Brugge (7), Zenit (1) vs Dortmund (10)
Dortmund are through to the round of 16. They will win the group if they beat Zenit, if both games are drawn, or whatever their result if Lazio lose to Club Brugge.
Lazio will go through if they avoid defeat by Club Brugge. They will win the group if they win and Dortmund do not, or if Lazio draw and Dortmund lose.
Club Brugge will go through if they beat Lazio, Zenit St. Petersburg are already confirmed to finish fourth.
Group G
Barcelona (15) vs Juventus (12), Dynamo Kyiv (1) vs Ferencváros (1)
Both Barcelona and Juventus are through to the round of 16. Juventus will only overtake Barcelona to finish first if they win by three goals or more, or any two-goal margin other than 2-0.
Neither Dynamo nor Ferencváros can reach the round of 16. To finish third, Dynamo must win or draw 0-0, 1-1 or 2-2; all other results mean Ferencváros finish third.
Group H
Paris Saint-Germain (9) vs İstanbul Başakşehir (3), Leipzig (9) vs Manchester United (9)
Manchester United will go through if they avoid defeat by Leipzig. United will finish first if they avoid defeat and Paris do not beat Başakşehir.
Paris will go through if they avoid defeat by Başakşehir, or even if they lose should the other game not end in a draw. Paris will finish first if they win.
Leipzig will go through if they beat United, or if they draw and Paris lose to Başakşehir. Leipzig will finish first if they win and Paris do not.
İstanbul Başakşehir are already confirmed to finish fourth.
Wednesday Fixtures
Group A
Bayern (13) vs Lokomotiv Moskva (3), Salzburg (4) vs Atlético (6)
Bayern are through to the round of 16 as group winners.
Atlético will go through if they avoid defeat by Salzburg. If they lose, they will go into the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in third place.
Salzburg will go through if they beat Atlético. They will finish third if they do not win, provided Lokomotiv do not beat Bayern.
Lokomotiv are unable to reach the round of 16. They will finish third if they beat Bayern and Salzburg do not beat Atlético.
Group B
Real Madrid (7) vs Borussia Mönchengladbach (8), Inter (5) vs Shakhtar (7)
Mönchengladbach will go through if they avoid defeat or if Shakhtar draw with Inter. Mönchengladbach will finish first if they win. Mönchengladbach cannot finish below third place.
Shakhtar will go through if they beat Inter, or if both games are drawn. Shakhtar will win the group if they win and Mönchengladbach do not. Shakhtar will finish fourth if they lose and Madrid avoid defeat.
Real Madrid will go through if they beat Mönchengladbach, or if they draw and Shakhtar lose to Inter. Madrid will win the group if they win and Shakhtar do not. Madrid will finish fourth if both they and Shakhtar lose.
Inter will go through if they beat Shakhtar and the other game is not drawn. Inter will finish fourth if they do not win.
Group C
Olympiacos (3) vs Porto (10), Manchester City (13) vs Marseille (3)
Manchester City and Porto are through as group winners and runners-up respectively. Olympaicos will need a Marseille loss to go to Europa while a win for Marseille eliminates Olympaicos.
Group D
Ajax (7) vs Atalanta (8), Midtjylland (1) vs Liverpool (12)
Liverpool are through to the next round and have won the group. Ajax or Atlanta will join them with a victory when the two face each other, while a draw would see Atlanta proceed and Ajax dropped to the Europa League. FC Midtjylland are already confirmed to finish bottom of the group.
