Alphonso Davies, the flying Bayern Munich left-back, has been named Canadian Men’s Player of the Year for the second time.

The youngest ever winner of the award aged 18 two years ago, Davies enjoyed a stellar 2020, making his latest accolade seem almost unavoidable.

Davies had three goals and 10 assists in all competitions – from left-back – as Bayern swept to the continental treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup and UEFA Champions League in Hansi Flick’s first season as coach.

Davies’ assist for Joshua Kimmich in Bayern’s 8-2 destruction of Barcelona in August’s Champions League quarter-finals – which saw him scoot past Nelson Semedo and lay on an easy finish for his teammate – won worldwide acclaim.

“To see what Alphonso Davies has accomplished this year is awe-inspiring for the next generation of players,” Canada coach John Herdman said. “His achievements have raised the flag in our sport higher than anyone else in our lifetime on the men’s side of the game and he has helped put this country as a football country on the world map.”

It has been a positive week for the Ghana-born left sider, who returned to team training with Bayern on Thursday following a torn ankle ligament sustained in the champions’ 5-0 win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in October.
