Belgian club KRC Genk will retire the No. 16 jersey worn by former Bafana Bafana defender Anele Ngcongca, according to Kickoff.com
He passed away at 33 on Monday in a car accident and the news of his death was received with grief in his native South Africa and across Belgium where he played for Genk between 2007 and 2015
The 33year old made over 200 appearances for Genk and won the Jupiler Pro League in 2011.
“Number 16 will never be worn again in our club,” Genk’s press and media manager Peter Morren told Kickoff.com
Belgium youth international Elias Sierra, who currently wears the number also confirmed to this publication that, in honour of Ngcongca, he had given up the strip and chosen to wear the No. 19 jersey instead.
“Yes, this is true. In honour of him, the No. 16 will be retired [and] because I had this number this season, I will get another number which is No. 19.”
