FC Bayern München striker Robert Lewandowski has been named the official Bundesliga Player of the Season 2019/20. He scored 34 goals in 31 games and beat competition from teammate Serge Gnabry, Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz, Borussia Dortmund duo Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner and Schalke 04’s Amine Harit.

The Polish striker Robert Lewandowski who is “very proud” is driven by his desire to always be better. He played a pivotal role in the Bavarian giants eighth consecutive Bundesliga title. He spoke to Bundesliga in an interview provided to OmaSports; “I have to say that I’m very happy, this award means a lot to me and I’m very proud of this title because the expectations on me are always very high, I’ve been playing in the Bundesliga for 10 years and everyone is accustomed to me always scoring goals and playing well, but I know that I always have to show something new or sometimes maybe spectacular.”

Bayern Munich ended the season with a 13points gap over second placed Borussia Dortmund scoring 100 goals in the process, but it wasn’t a forthright and easy season as described by Lewandowski. Match day 10, Bayern Munich were thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt which led to the departure of Niko Kovac and the appointment of Hansi Flick. The fortunes didn’t turn immediately and further defeats to Bayern Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach left them in seventh place on the table on match day 15. An unbeaten run of 16 wins and a draw in the second half of the season ultimately turned things around and handed Reds the title.

“I have to say that the first three or four months at the beginning of the season were very difficult for us and every goal I scored was very important for us, goals are just one part of football. In the end the most important thing is how many titles you win as a team. If I score the goals and in the end we win the titles, this is the best thing that can happen.” Lewandowski told the Bundesliga.

Lewandowski earlier in the season set a record of the first player to score in the first 11 games of the season, selected the matchday two hattrick in 3-0 win at FC Schalke 04 as an amazing feeling and his personal high point of the season amidst several other personal accolades. A towering trophy cabinet and individual trophies and records, Lewandowski says his best “is still to come”.

“[The secret] is to always be better, to be the best and to get better. Looking forward: it doesn’t matter how many titles we won or how many goals I scored already, I want to be a better player, a better striker, to score more goals. I’m trying to do my best.” Lewandowski concluded.
