The father of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been found dead in Brazil, local police have confirmed.
Jose (57) had been declared missing on Wednesday evening after he had gone swimming in a lake that was near where he had a holiday home. Later, police confirmed the tragic news that his body had been found and that he had died from drowning. There is no suspicion of foul play.
A search team from the Cacapava do Sul Fire Department went to assist following the disappearance and reported that a body had been found just a minute before midnight.
São Paulo Futebol Clube issued the following tweet; “With much regret, São Paulo FC receives the sad news of the death of José Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel. Our condolences and solidarity with the two athletes and their families. A lot of strength and a lot of light at this point.”
“It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker’s death, the father of our ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel,” Brazilian club and Alisson’s former club Internacional said after the news broke.
Alisson Becker, who made a record transfer move from Roma to Liverpool in 2018, and his older brother Muriel at Fluminense both play as goalkeeper and both spent time at Internacional.
Liverpool are next in action against Sheffield United in the Premier League on Sunday. Alisson has come under fire lately due to error strewn performances and faces a tough time ahead with his father’s death.
