Wenger reiterates admiration for Vardy after Liverpool performance

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his admiration for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy after his performance in the 3-1 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool.

Vardy scored the second goal of the game, capitalising on a communication error between Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker and new signing Ozan Kabak. Wenger was in the studio for beIN SPORTS during the game and he reiterated his admiration for Vardy.

“Jamie Vardy is an animal – he’s always in the game. He looks like he doesn’t get out of the game, mentally, and the great strikers are like that, they are convinced they will score at some stage. And that allows him, even when he misses a chance, to stay in the game.” Wenger said.

Wenger attempted to sign Vardy after Leicester’s title winning season in 2016 but the deal collapsed and Vardy stayed on at Leicester.

“I offered him a lot of money, but Leicester had just won the championship in 2016 and Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha at the time did absolutely not want to lose him.

“Leicester offered him a longer contract and approximately the same amount of money, if not more.”

Vardy has scored over 100 Premier League goals for Leicester and was the Golden boot winner last season. Wenger has been out of management since leaving Arsenal in 2018.
