The world of Spanish football has been discussing El Mundo’s exclusive report about Lionel Messi’s Barcelona contract and Victor Font has had his say.
The Barcelona presidential candidate believes that the Argentine deserves the 555,237,619 euros in his deal.
“Messi has earned every last euro paid to him by Barcelona,” Font wrote on Twitter.
“He has not ruined us. On the contrary, he is the best player in history and we want him to stay with us forever more.”
“Messi is an important asset, but if he’s not there, it’s not the end of the world,” Font said on Onda Cero.
He did, however, emphasise that Barcelona should do everything possible to try and get Messi to stay.
Font explained that despite what he earns, Barcelona’s dire financial state is not due to him.
“Messi generates [what he earns] and more,” Font added.
“To imply that Barcelona are ruined [financially] because of Messi is a totally wrong conclusion.”
The figures revealed by El Mundo show Messi’s most recent contract to be worth 138 million euros per season between fixed and variable payments, with two separate bonuses. One, for renewing, which amounts to 115,225,000 euros and another, a loyalty bonus, of 77,929,955 euros.
