Borussia Monchengladbach has condemned Marcus Thuram’s spitting incident and fined him a month’s wages while he awaits the league’s action on him.

The 23-year-old son of former French international Lilian Thuram spat in the face of his opponent Stefan Posch during Gladbach’s 2:1 home loss to Hoffenheim on Saturday and saw the red card when the score was 1:1.

Rose and some of Thuram’s teammates attributed their first home loss of the season to Thuram’s red card.

“It just doesn’t belong on the football pitch. That goes far beyond the borders. ” head coach Marco Rose said.

“A shame for the team, a shame for him. It doesn’t really suit his character at all.” teammate Valentino Lazaro said.

Thuram spat in Posch’s face.

“Something happened today that does not correspond to my character and should never have happened. I apologize to everyone, to Stefan Posch, to my opponents, to my team-mates, to my family and everyone who saw my reaction. Of course I will accept all the consequences for my gestures.” Thuram wrote on Instagram

Sports director Max Eberl said: “I had a long conversation with Marcus this morning in which he again apologized to me and thus to the club for his behavior. As an association, we will punish him for his behavior, which led to his eviction, with a penalty amounting to one month’s salary, which will benefit a social cause.” Gladbach’s sports director, Max Eberl said.

According to Bild, Thuram earns about €1.8million per year, this means a fine of about €150,000, a record fine at the club.

According to the report, €50,000 euros for former player Raul Bobadilla for calling the fourth official “son of a bitch” in 2010 was the highest fine in Gladbach’s history.
