The press briefing came to a close this week in Tokyo and omasports was there. One of the major stories coming out of the conference is the announcement of a unique technology for the Olympic and Paralympic Games by the games Organising Committee which was tagged the “Press Network”.

The Press Network will make available cabled internet access at every press-tabled stand position and every primary photo position in venues, as well as each Venue Media Centre and the Main Press Centre (MPC). This access to the Press Network will be given by Tokyo 2020 free of charge to all accredited press representatives. This will be the first time it will happen in this history of the Olympic and Paralympic games.

The Press Network will be supported by efficient and effective Wi-Fi in all press areas in all venues, also free of charge.

That’s not all, and there will be an additional level of a facility within this cabled network for the major news agencies (Press Plus), using MAC address authentication of laptops, cameras and equipment, which will replace the old agency VLAN. This innovative, dedicated cable network will be a paid service created in a close relationship between the Tokyo 2020 Technology Department, their technology and telecom providers, the leading international news agencies.

Tokyo 2020 also announced that there would be a whole new dimension added to the interpretation system during the games and that is they will provide simultaneous professional interpretation for every press conference at competition venues and the MPC. The press conferences will even now be streamed on the Games INFO system so that journalists can watch the conferences on their laptops or phones from any venue, live or delayed. At previous games, only four sports (athletics, gymnastics, basketball and swimming) and the main conferences at the MPC had simultaneous interpretation. The others had consecutive interpreting.
